TSKD 188

The Second Preliminary Round

Fran pumped herself up and stepped into the arena, only to be greeted by a stage of epic proportions, one so massive and well decorated that it simply couldn’t be compared to the dingy thing used in the first preliminary round. Its construction consisted of two parts, a round platform and the larger cylindrical wall that enclosed it. Around the arena were enough seats to fit over a thousand spectators. The place was beyond packed; every single seat was filled and then some.

Our entrance was welcomed by a set of cheers from the audience, cheers so deafeningly loud that they caused my blade to tremble in response.

In spite of all that, Fran was as usual; she literally didn’t care about her surroundings.

Three of our four foes already stood atop the stage, one of which we happened to recognize.

「Huh? Fran!?」

「Oh come on! Now I’m sure to lose!」

Judith fell forward onto her knees the moment she realized she was up against us. It was an action I honestly couldn’t blame her for. There was basically no way for her to win given how the fact that Fran was way stronger than she was.

Apparently she wasn’t the only one to have recognized Fran, as the other contestants had also adopted similar expressions of unease.

「So that’s the Magic Sword Girl…? Huh, she really was just a kid.」

「Don’t let your guard down. Her rank is even higher than ours are. I hear she’s a C ranker now.」

The first round of the preliminaries seemed to have filtered out most of the less capable adventurers. All but one of the contestants present were skilled enough to intuit that Fran was no weakling. The only one that failed to recognize her strength was the last to enter the ring.

「Hahahah! Why’s there a brat here? Isn’t this supposed to be a Martial Arts Tournament?」

The obnoxiously loud Blue Catkin that joined the fray laughed before taking a closer look at her and furrowing his brows.

「How the hell did you manage to get past the first round? Did you bribe all your opponents? Or were they just all pedophiles?」

「Heh. Bullshit! You’re a god damned Black Catkin! No way in hell a wimp catkin like you could actually put up a decent fight. Know your place. Wait, I know. That old White Dogkin geezer must’ve pulled a few strings. That has to have been it.」

Getting a closer look at him allowed me to recognize that he was in fact a member of Blue Pride. Specifically, he was one of the two people that’d been standing by the gate and trying to convince Aurel to see them.

The realisation immediately explained why he was aggressive on both Fran and her benefactor.

「Just you wait, wimp cat. I’ll tear your jaw off so you can’t surrender, strip you nude and embarrass the hell out of you before finally slowly beating you death.」

「…Talking really big for just Blue Pride.」

「Haah? What’d you just say?」

「You tried to visit Aurel by lying and claiming you were famous, but you were turned away at the gates because your lie seen through right away. You’re just a group of weak, pathetic, small time mercenaries. And stay away from me. You stink.」

Fran seemed to have snapped given that she’d started speaking in longer, more drawn out sentences.

「You little bitch…!」

A large screen that resembled the kind you’d see in a sports stadium decorated one of the stadium’s sides. It seemed to be some sort of magic item, as it was doing as a monitor would, and displayed a blown up version of the interaction that’d just occured in real time.

The crowd’s response to the Blue Catkin’s remarks was rather poor. A few of the men had urged him on, but a greater number of women had ended up booing. Fran’s rebuttal, on the other hand, had caused the entire stadium to erupt into cheers. The man immediately popped a vein in rage, but Fran just totally ignored him and everything he said from that point onward, which, as one might suspect, only caused him to get even angrier.

Their interaction was one the crowd really seemed to like, as its members began to jeer in an attempt to urge the two on.

With the mood set, the match finally began.

The Blue Catkin immediately locked his eyes to Fran’s position and lunged straight at her. His skill with the sword wasn’t too shabby, and he came at her with nothing held back; it was clear that he planned to kill her. His actions caused me to want to scoff at how childish he was. He ended up completely losing all sense of rationality just because of the slightest bit of mockery.

Though, that much, I’d honestly expected.

What I didn’t expect, however, was for the three other contestants to join him. They all immediately decided to cooperate in order to eliminate Fran, as, the Blue Catkin aside, they were aware that she was the strongest in the group. Judith happened to stand out from her peers, as she purposefully placed herself at the rear so she could use the other three contestants as meat shields.

Both Fran and I were rather impressed by her actions. She hadn’t given up on winning despite the fact that she knew we’d be able to overwhelm her.

The unexpected four versus one situation put Fran in what could be thought of as a numerical disadvantage, but she didn’t mind. Fran simply didn’t care that all four other contestants had ganged up her. She didn’t complain, nor did she bother calling any of the four out for unfairness.

Instead, she simply retalited.

She swung me without bothering to draw my blade from its sheath and hit the Blue Catkin right in the jaw. The impact caused him to fly into the air before spiraling back down towards the ground.

Fran then struck again; she used the rising momentum that accompanied her first strike in order to deliver a powerful horizontal blow.

「Heavy Slash.」

Heavy Slash was considered a relatively low tier skill, but it’d proven to be more than effective enough given just how powerful Fran had become. The attack sent the swordsman and spearman that followed the Blue Catkin tumbling back into Judith. Neither of the three were capable of recovering from the attack and so, they were all forced out of bounds.

Only a few seconds had passed, but Fran had already eliminated three of her four opponents. She could’ve easily done the same to the last of the bunch, but instead, intentionally chose to draw out her assault.

「Hiiii! F-Fwelp me…!」

She swung me downwards. In doing so, she caught the Blue Catkin in midair, smashed him into the ground, and caused a dull crack to reverberate through it.

「Gahiii… fuaarghh…!」

The blood in the Blue Catkin’s mouth rendered him incapable of anything but a few groans. He’d barely managed to hang onto his consciousness, not because he was sturdy, but because Fran had made sure to hold back just enough for him to do so.

「I… huwwenda! I huwwenda!」

「Don’t understand.」

「Still don’t understand.」

Well, yeah, it’s kinda hard for him to actually speak given that he doesn’t have a jaw or chin anymore.

「I horheit da hatsh!」

「Too stupid to know how to surrender? Well, can’t be helped since Blue Catkin.」

Fran basically totally admitted to knowing exactly what he was trying to say, but it didn’t matter. What did was the fact that she’d done unto him exactly what he claimed he’d wanted to do to her.

「Should strip and humiliate you?」

「Hiiii! I’m hwory! I’m hworry! Pweave, htop! Haf murhy!」

The sheer amount of bloodlust Fran’d been emanating caused the Blue Catkin to become as scared as he could possibly be; a warm, wet patch spread across his nether regions as he deliriously begged for her forgiveness.

Naturally, the referee had realized that the match couldn’t go on, and so, he hurried over to the stage and attempted to climb atop it.

Fran noticed him approach, so she immediately moved to deliver the finishing blow before he could stop her.

「Will end as requested.」

She muttered a few words under her breath while swinging me like a golf club and sending the Blue Catkin fly right off the stage. She seemed to have gone a bit overboard, as he soared for what looked like 10 whole meters before finally hitting the ground.

I was a bit worried that the crowd would end up finding her actions distasteful, but it turned out that they actually ended up liking them as they immediately broke into applause.

「And it’s over! The young lady just pulled off the impossible and sent a full grown man flying off the stage with just one hit! Ain’t that just incredible ladies and gentlemen? It’s not something you’d expect from someone with such a cute face, that’s for sure!」

Wait, there’s been a shoutcaster this whole time? How the hell did I not notice?

The caster’s announcement caused the crowd to break out into an extra loud cheer.

「And with that C rank adventurer Fran, the Magic Sword Girl, wins the 11th west block and secures herself a spot in the main event without even drawing the blade she’s nicknamed after!」

      1. It’s american date format or something. They write month first, day second, and year last.
I’m pretty sure they do it maliciously, to increase the amount of confusion in the world, just like with inches and lbs.
Because the only way to know which format is used is when the day is above 12. This means that the number over 12 is the day, and the other 2-digit number is month. The 4-digit number is the year (the joy of not living in the 1st century!).
If there is no date with a day over 12 in a lineup of dates, you’re fucked, and there is no way to tell which it is.

Just imagine it being 12/7/05. Am I talking about Lewis and Clark temporarily settling in Fort Clatsop on Dec 7th, 1805, or possibly the British and Japanese renewing their alliance on July 12th, 1905?

Or could I be talking about May 7th, 2012, when Paeleoclimatological research claimed dinosaur farts may have warmed the earth?

Truly, this day/month/year or year/day/month or whatever thing has gotten out of control.

    1. I doubt it. Not unless she evolves into the divine black catkin, presuming author comes up with the way and it’s not “kill an evolved beastkin holding minimum 10 times all stats”.

    2. doubt it, blue catkin are pretty much permavillain status now, even if it was the beast kings orders they gladly and gleefully sell black catkin into slavery, not really much room for a redeemed blue catkin imo.

they all look down on her because the black catkin race is “weak” and they therefore only see them as slaves.

      1. Well, it was explained that they are more or less brainwashed since childhood to act like that against the “weakest” tribe be it by the elders that know the truth or the golden lions who fear they true strength.

Doesn’t mean we can’t have fun watching them fly.

      2. i’m not certain if they even remember the original/real reason still, rumina pretty much shows its been 500 years since the last evolution save for maybe “the black cat” who’s status is yet unknown =/

i think possibly only the golden lion/red catkin tribe know the truth now… also i got the feeling the current lion king isn’t actually a bad guy.

he “usurped” the throne which is arguably seated by a false/corrupt ruler… depending on what the black catkin tribe originally did to get punished by the gods.

at the very least its definitely not cool to suppress the black catkin to the point the red catkin/golden lion tribe have.

      3. “all” as in black catkin? as in not all black catkin are weak? or as in not all blue catkin are trash?

cause don’t think the story has given one instance where the blue catkin are anything other than something to revile so far.

      4. current black catkin are weak, give it up, even fran can be like this from miraculous meeting with shishou only, the previous black cat adventurer Kiara are the sole exception, that one a genuine monster

yes blue catkin are trash, like, 99.99% of ’em are trash, but not all~ it’s simply because you haven’t read it far enough~

i mean, when i read other comment, i see someone already spoil a little bit about future blue cat bro

      5. well, i don’t like spoiler in the first place, where’s the fun? it actually really nice seeing everyone reaction when they totally didn’t see it comin

you just remind me of that UNKNOWN guy from slime tensei site, that kinda “intrigue” me, so i spoiled it a little bit, sorry for that, well, enjoy the story then, this tournament arc are one of the best arc in TSKD~

    1. They were approaching in a triangle, two at the front and one at the back.
Fran swung the sheathed sword horizontally and hit the two at the front. They fell backwards and hit the one behind, and all three of them were knocked further backwards and out of bounds.

      1. It was a diamond formation with the blue cat in front. Fran bypass the blue cat and hit the two in the middle. Otherwise, ignore that blue cat and your description is correct.

  1. I know that Fran was always merciless, because when she was a slave, instead of trying to run away she intended to kill the slavers.

But isn’t she becoming more and more ruthless?

    1. I think she was worse earlier, back when she was dragging criminals back into abandoned buildings and torturing them before killing them, unless I am misremembering? but being absolutely horrifying is one of her established traits.

    2. naw, she didn’t kill her opponent, there have been parts of this story where she has straight slaughtered people.

tbh what i like about this series is master is kind of her shoulder angel, keeps her from going to far, so she only really kills those who have earned/deserved it.

been reading way too many xanxia series where the MC is overly blood thirsty, which is better than your typical LN MC that’s scared to hurt a butterfly but fran hits a good balance of both.

      1. Its tournament and she would get disqualified if killed him.. if this was some black alley 100% he would be dead or tortured to hell 😀

    3. Ruthless? Fran stuck the Blue catkin only three times: strike up, strike down, and a home run. Seems pretty merciful given that Fran kept him alive with limbs intact. That’s after the insults to her tribe and his attempt to kill her.

    1. Will a blue catkin grow black if he becomes decent?
Are all blue catkin we meet actually exiles too mean to be allowed to live in bluecatkinland?

      1. Blue Catkin is the basic form – evolved beastkin are tougher than that. They become Blue Tigerkin or something when they evolve.
But you probably know that already.

  2. thx for the chapter ^^

i have been looking atvthe list of raws cardbox-sensei hasclinked on his site
at the beginning of the list, namely number 0 & 00 are nice explanations, incl. a list of skills with their explanations and their rarity
… you can ask google translate for the details, but dont expect quality work like on this site

  3. I kind of feel that she should be disqualified. A whole stadium of witnesses all knew that the guy had surrendered, if not by voice then by body-language, and she hit him out of the ring after that. There are not many rules, but that really makes it seem as though the rules are not being well enforced. This could easily come back and bite her later. It calls into question whether the guild will protect Fran as “someone on a mission from them” if they don’t protect this guy as “someone in our tournament and in a ‘no fighting’ situation”…

“Fran pumped herself up and stepped into the arena, only to be greeted by a stage of epic proportions, one so massive and well decorated that it simply simply couldn’t be compared to the dingy thing used in the first preliminary round.”
Does “simply simply” mean that it is very simple?

    1. The whole stadium heard her being threatened, and she did stop before the ref could rebuke her.
Plus the audience seemed to love it.

Also all participants do sign a waver knowing they could die in the early rounds.

      Liked by 1 person

    2. Not really, the participant has signed a contract before joining the tournament that acknowledges that they could die anytime, the later round is safer only because they have healing potion and so on prepared, they could still die at anytime and it’s not against the rule until the referee says its over, hence Fran finished the Blue beastkin before the referee stop the match. It just served to prove that she’s ruthless, which is pretty normal for adventurer in this world and so the guild, people and everyone else wont has any problem with that at all. It not just a friendly sport match like in ours world after all. If anything the only thing that might bite back at her is now she may gather attention from the beast lord, but given that she already join the tournament it’s pretty much unavoidable

    1. given the way the story is setup there probably will not be a single decent blue catkin in it ever, they are as a race fran’s mortal enemy…

would not surprise me if she did something drastic against the blue catkin once she finally evolves.

  4. Thanks for the chapter

In my own opinion, that ruthlessness is rather excessive and unnecessary

Is this a trait in black cat tribe? Ruthless? Sadistic? Merciless? Arrogance? (Her curt manner actually amplifying this negative perception)

I’m saying this because the black cat girl from 50years ago is rather similar as fran

This makes me wonder if the curse on the black cat tribe is because of this ruthlessness in the past during their height in power. If it is, then no wonder they are hated

    1. can you blame her? the blue catkin kidnap and sell black catkin into slavery like its going out of style.

you make it sound like her being ruthless is something new, hell she did’nt kill her opponent which is a step up from what she’d normally pull especially because its a blue catkin, rather half expected her to find a way to kill him with out getting disqualified.

  5. “that it simply simply couldn’t” double simply

“as she purposefully herself at the rear so she could the other three contestants as meatshields” ->
“as she purposefully [positioned] herself so she could [use] the other…” ?

  6. I wanted Fran to knock the other contestants out and clobbering that bluecat until he gets unconscious.
Well at least she beat him up. Thanks for the chap

    1. thankyou, way too many people commenting that fran is being “too ruthless” as is she hasnt straight cold blooded killed people before.

tbh had half hoped she’d find a loophole way to kill the POS, the only good blue catkin is a dead one.

  7. damn what the hell is with this comment section, so many people whining about fran being “too ruthless” she’s straight up killed people in nearly cold blood before.

you all are acting as if her being ruthless is surprising/something new, and furthermore can you blame her? blue catkin are her mortal enemies, they capture and sell black catkin into slavery without skipping a beat, i’m actually more surprised that she didn’t find a way to kill him such as to not get disqualified especially because he threatened her.

likely the merc group will try to ambush/gang up on her later and she’ll get her chance then.

  8. Thanks for the chapter.

The blue catkin still has all of his limbs, Fran has come a long way since the early chapters. The first blue catkin we met lost both his legs below the knees. Before leaving that town she dismembered a blue catkin, throwing each limb into storage one by one before finally killing him and throwing the remainder of the corpse into storage. (He had some nice gear)

This one got away with just a destroyed jaw and a serious scare. She didn’t bother to go breaking any limbs or such and only finished him off by knocking him out of bounds.

People need to remember, the blue catkin don’t just sell the black catkin into slavery (which is bad enough) they take pleasure in torturing, sometimes to death, any and all black catkin they catch and then selling them off. Fran has plenty of reasons to despise the race starting with just her personal experiences of what happened to her parents and herself. None of the blue catkin so far have done anything to change her attitude either, if anything they have just made her opinion of them worst.

    1. The one the lost his leg was a Red Dog.

In actually Fran has cadavers of every Blue Cats she’s killed in dimensional storage (I think about 50, remember the trading company), mostly for keeping things clean and tidy.

  9. I’m starting to think that the main character is a female sword. Neko (Cat) (Submissive Yuri) and Tachi (Sword) (Dominate Yuri).

  10. Any time the artist introduces a Blue Catkin in the manga, I can’t recognize them with all their body parts attached. Then he’ll lose his arms or legs after talking shit and it’ll hit me: Oh! He really IS a Blue Catkin, huh?
